Brands Track Day

Cresting Paddock Hill turning into Druids

On July 24th 2006 I drove at Brands Hatch on a TVR Car Club Track Day organised by Easytrack. I set off on my own around 6:30 am to arrive at the track early enough to get a garage in the pits, grab a coffee and listen to the driver’s briefing at 8:30.

I shared with a couple of other Griff drivers so was in good company and interestingly Mac’s early and very original Griffith 4.0 litre has a registration number only one digit different to my Old S3c!

Drivers were split into three groups based on ability and I was considered to be Intermediate, clearly Andy and Ian have never driven with me! Track time was then divided into three sessions with one group joining the track as the previous group exited, this worked fine and in truth 20 mins driving every hour was plenty. I managed around 100 laps and over a tank and a half of 98 octane which works out to around 7 m.p.g.!

The Brands Hatch marshals and track staff together with the Easytrack management were excellent and although one couldn’t describe Brands as a beginners track there were few incidents, mainly amongst the experts ;-)

If you’ve never driven at Brands it’s a “must do”, Paddock Hill Bend is the automotive equivalent of the Pepsi-Max, it just seems to fall away from you forever as your turn right from the main straight. I particularly enjoyed the atmosphere of this club event, chatting to old friends and meeting new ones. So fine weather, friends to chat with and sharing the track with a diverse assortment of TVRs from the thunderous Tuscan race cars to an immaculately prepared 1960’s Grantura all made for an excellent day.
